LinkedIn adds checks, but they cannot prove a job is real

New identity, workplace, and colleague checks may help confirm parts of a LinkedIn profile. Job seekers still need to check the recruiter and employer independently.

In 60 seconds

  • Job seekers, recruiters, and organizations using LinkedIn should care about polished fake identities and invented work histories.
  • Check the recruiter’s affiliation, then compare the job and contact details with the employer’s own website.
  • Pause before sharing identity documents, installing software, or moving a conversation off LinkedIn.
  • A verification signal may confirm one claim, but it does not prove that a job or employer is genuine.

Who should care and what to do today

This matters to people looking for work, recruiters, and organizations that use LinkedIn to hire or represent staff. Generative artificial intelligence, or AI, can make it easier to create convincing profile photos, biographies, résumés, messages, and recommendations.

If a recruiter contacts you, review the person’s profile for identity, workplace, or colleague confirmations. Then visit the claimed employer’s website independently by typing the address yourself or using a trusted bookmark. Compare the company’s contact details and job listing with what the recruiter sent.

The useful step today is to pause and verify the recruiter and employer through a separate, trusted contact path before sharing personal information. Do not install software, send identity documents, or move the conversation off LinkedIn because someone pressures you to do so.

What LinkedIn is changing

Malwarebytes reports that LinkedIn is adding several checks intended to make fake professional identities, invented work histories, and company impersonation harder to pull off. The checks use verified people and company Pages.

One feature lets colleagues and classmates confirm that they worked or studied with someone during a period listed on that person’s profile. This confirms an affiliation. It does not rate the person’s skills or recommend them.

Admins of verified company Pages can remove people who falsely claim to work for the company from the Page’s associated people and search results. This does not remove the person’s profile or erase the claim from that profile.

LinkedIn is also testing a setting that would require people who want to associate themselves with a company Page to verify their workplace, such as through a work email address. The company is extending partnerships that let users display a LinkedIn-verified identity on other services, including Truecaller and PeerSpot, alongside Adobe and UserTesting.

Why a profile check cannot prove a job is real

The checks may help someone decide whether a recruiter is affiliated with a company they recognize. They may be less helpful when the claimed employer itself is part of the scam. A scammer can invent a startup, build a polished company Page, and use fake job listings or recruiters to attract applicants, Malwarebytes reports.

A verification signal does not show that a job opportunity is genuine or that the hiring process is safe. Malwarebytes warns about unsolicited approaches, pressure to move conversations away from LinkedIn, requests to install software or share identity documents, and offers that arrive before a credible interview process.

That does not mean every unexpected message is a scam. It means the profile should be only one part of the check. Confirm the company independently and make sure its contact details and job listing match the message.

The signals may still be useful

Malwarebytes says LinkedIn hopes that identity checks, workplace confirmation, colleague support, and company controls will make made-up profiles less persuasive. It also notes that criminals may try to misuse visible trust signals through stolen accounts, manipulated verification, or groups of false profiles.

The practical result is limited but useful: a checked profile may tell you more about one claim, such as a workplace connection. It does not answer the larger question of whether the job and employer are genuine. Treat the signal as a reason to investigate further, not as permission to skip that investigation.

Does this affect me?

Who may be affected
People seeking work through LinkedIn, recruiters, and organizations that use LinkedIn to hire or represent staff should care. Anyone receiving an unexpected job approach may face this situation.
How to check
Review the recruiter’s profile signals, then independently visit the claimed employer’s website and compare its contact details and job listing with the message.
What to do
Pause and verify the recruiter and employer through a separate, trusted contact path before sharing information or continuing the application.
What to avoid
Do not install software, send identity documents, or move the conversation off LinkedIn because a recruiter applies pressure.

Common questions

Does a LinkedIn verification signal prove that a job offer is genuine?

No. Malwarebytes says verification can help confirm an identity or affiliation, but it cannot show that the job or employer is real. A fake company can build a polished Page and use fake listings or recruiters.

What should I check before responding to a LinkedIn recruiter?

Check the recruiter’s stated affiliation, visit the employer’s website independently, and compare the company’s contact details and job listing with the recruiter’s message. Be cautious if the person pressures you to leave LinkedIn, install software, or share identity documents.

What does a colleague or classmate confirmation actually mean?

It confirms that the person worked or studied with someone during the period shown on the profile. It does not rate the person’s ability or recommend them for a job.

Can a company remove a false employee claim from LinkedIn?

Admins of verified company Pages can remove people who falsely claim to work there from the company’s associated people and search results. Malwarebytes says this does not remove the person’s profile or erase the claim from it.
